Homgren returns

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=703934

Seahawks 35, Redskins 14

This game was much closer than the score indicates as the Seahawks returned 2 pic-sixes late in the game to win. Obviously the storyline for this NFC divisional round matchup is Homgren returning to Lambeau where he returned the Packers to glory not seen in the last quarter decade and leaving for Seattle with a ton more dough. I will NEVER forgive Holmgren for losing the Super Blow against the Broncoes leaving from greener, litterly green as in money, pastures in Seattle. Much will be made from Holmgreen's street named after him in Green Bay, as well as the last playoff meeting between the two. If you don't remember, the game went into overtime, and during the coin toss, Hasselbeck said, out load, we want the ball and we're gona score. Score he did not, as he threw a PIC-SIX to Al Harris for 52 yards in a Packers 33-27 victory. One of my favorite Packers moments. Game shouldn't be a problem, only concern is Pass-protection. Their front 7 is very fast, and good at getting pressure. If Favre stays on his feet, and isn't rushed, Green Bay wins in a laugher.

Brady MVP, but not unanimously

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=704043

Favre and the Packers dream season continued today, as Favre received the one and only non-Brady MVP vote. Favre had a great year, perhaps his best year ever, but Brady's year was perhaps the best statistically in NFL history, notably breaking Peyton Manning's 50 TD in a season record. Brady undoubtedly deserved it, and probably should have won unanimously, as he had a great season. However, around this time of year, you always hear rumblings of the true meaning of valuable. Had the Patriots gone 4-12 with Brady's year, he wouldn't have won since his team would have hypothetically missed the playoffs. But what is the true meaning of valuable? Does it mean taking a team with less talent and making them great, or is putting up great numbers, which in turn SHOULD make your team great. I guess what I'm saying is put Brady on the Pack, and Favre on the Pats, and the Packers probably go 10-6, and the Patriots 15-1. I think Favre was the most VALUABLE player, while Brady was the best player on the bets team. Is that so crazy? Perhaps. I don't mean to degrade Brady at all, but it is always a topic of debate around this time.

Ikegwuonu, several coaches leaving Badgers

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=704367

The only large impact loss is Ikegwonu, as he puts a huge gap in our already weak secondary. I think he made a bad choice, not because he isn't ready, but similar to Brian Calhoun, he has nothing to lose by staying in school. He has the talent, but his big problem is that he has mental lapses, and that is costly in the NFL. I think he gets picked on the first day as most talent guys do, I wouldn't mind the Packers taking him, but if he could clear the mental lapses from his resume, he has 1st RD potential. There always seems to be 4-6 CB picked in the 1st RD, mostly by contenders growing replacements, or helping their nickel team, or by bad teams who need a corner badly. The coaches, I could care less. The offensive line has been studly for the last couple of years, but was that the talent or the coaches. Joe Thomas made a great transition to the NFL, so i'll say the players. The defensive coordinator was great last year, sucked this year. Sound familiar. Coaches are almost always graded on performance, not actual teaching methods or tactics. The whole team underachieved this year, at least as perceived by the media, and the defense was a large part of that. Waiting on words as replacements.

Bucks win in my presences

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=704103

Bucks 93, Bobcats 89

Since I live in Charlotte, or the suburbs, I decided that I should see my favorite team, the Bucks, with some of my friends. To clarify, I still root for the Bobcats, but obviously my alligence is to the Bucks. Decked out in my Redd jersey, I was disappointed when he didn't play, but was thrilled by the win. During the game, I was heckling Charlie Bell due to his comments in the Journal that day. He played pretty well I suppose. I also found myself screaming that Yi was out of position, Simmons runs like he's 90, and Gadzuric didn't play, lucky for him. There was also a small Aussie following cheering Andrew Bogut on, and very often due to his great game. He dominated Emeka Okafor all game long. Nice win over a lousy opponent. Weak crowd as well. I'd say around 10,000. My friend asked if the Bobcats would move, and I said no. It is simple economics, new arena=30 years. Plus Charlotte has shown that they aren't like Atlanta. When the team is good, they will show up in droves, and for 5 years after. The Bucks need a new arena. Imagine the embarrassment of another team leaving. Milwaukee is a great NBA town when the Bucks are even moderately good, and it should stay like that.

Marquette goes down

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=704099

West Virginia 79, Marquette 64

Simply an inexcusable loss. Miserable defense and rebounding contributed to the devastating loss. Marquette has the makings of a top team in the country that should contend for the national championship, but losses like this only hurt your reputation. Now, a nearly automatic 5 to 7 place drop in the rankings from #10 is certain. Usually losses because of a horrible shooting night, key calls going against you, or another team shooting lights out, are not acceptable, but you can deal with it. However, defense and rebounding, which are essentially hustling, should never be the reason for the loss. I know that some people could write this off as merely a Big East loss on the road that will inevitably happen, but not under the circumstances that it occurred.

Another writer disrespecting the Crew

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7635010

I tell ya, I don't even think the season is necessary after hearing all these doomsday predictions about the Brewers vs Cubs division race. Do these authors not realize that the off season is not nearly over? They have nothing better than to report about unfinished products? Joe Dillon will not start in LF next year, at least not on a full time basis. At most, he starts against LHP, which is somewhere between 20 and 33 % of total AB. You, Mr Perry, cannot seriously think you can compare offenses by saying just who is the better than who at each position. For example, the catching position is supposedly advantage Cubs, I'd have to say even, and 1B is advantage Brewers. Two average Cs different DO NOT equal the difference between the best 1B in the league and an average one Derek Lee. Also, I think the Brewers bullpen will be better than the Cubs. He claims that the Cubs have a dynamite closer in Kerry Wood who has NO career saves, while saying Gagne's 20 bad innings in Boston make him terrible. Forgot Texas again bro. I'll be sure to forget you as well.

Paul Chryst to Purdue?

http://blogs.jsonline.com/71558.aspx

Chryst has really helped with the revitalization of Wisconsin FB. The continued sucess of running backs with Chryst under the helm has to be, at least a part, due to Chryst's work. I credit him to our overall sollid QB play over the last decade. Will our offense take a hit if he were to leave? To lose him to Purdue would also be devastating. Purdue is a third tier Big 10 team, and could move into the second tier with this hiring. A friend of mine is a big Purdue fan and said that they would contend for the Big 10 title with a competent coach and a tad better recruiting. With Chryst potentially in the fold, with an offense with weapons for a potentially deadly team. With our loss being their gain, could we also lose some ground to Michigan and OSU???

Wisconsin (Brian Butch) beats Iowa

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=703916

Wisconsin 64, Iowa 51

Brian Butch is finally living up to his McDonald's All-American 5-star status. After his erupted elbow last March against OSU, I thought Wisconsin's season was finished. Although he didn't produce particularly well overall, he was still a threat to shoot. He has impressed me with his tenacity this season. He had the great Pittsburgh game last year, but never seemed to look for his shot all that much. This year, he is a force to be reckoned with underneath, which is necisary in the swing offense. I just love the teamwork this year. All starters can possibly get between 10 and 15 pts on any given night, with Butch and Hughes able to get 20-25 if they are really feeling it.

Luis Gonzalez interested in the Brewers?

http://blogs.jsonline.com/70982.aspx

Who wouldn't want to play for the Brewers. Young, upcoming team with playoff expectations. He fits the bill offensively, with little Ks and good OBP, with moderate power, but is miserable defensively and since he is an established veteran will probably cost between 3 and 5 million. I still remember his bloop single off Rivera over Jeter to win the 2001 WS, as Counsell dashes home. 57 and 142 that year was pretty good, but by any means a fluke, possible juicer. Thats the problem with this era, seasons like that are mired with allegations about steroids, HGH, the whole nine yards. Kenny Lofton is also intriguing possibility. He has good range, shit arm that can be covered in LF, and a great OBP. Only problem is he almost has to be platooned, hits LH like Jenkins. O but we have Gabe Kapler. I'm still in the Bobby Kielty camp to platoon with Gross or I suppose Lofton. Almost an ideal #2 hitter considering the cost and the fact he wouldn't be signed long term and not block LaPorta. I still want to trade for a 3B, Rolen sounds good, move Hall to LF, Hart to CF, and Braun to RF. Hall can then be traded or moved back to 3B, something I am against, when LaParta is ready.

Bucks go back to square 1

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=703819

Wizards 101, Bucks 77

The score looks horrible, but the fact of the matter is that it was actually, believe it or not, worse. Yes Michael Redd didn't play, but it was still a home game. This team is starting to become borderline pathetic. All of those on the trade Michael bandwagon, which I am not, are nuts. Just look at how this team fell apart without him. I think the most telling story about this game was a comment by Bobby Simmons, worthless, $10 million a year, Bobby Simmons.

"There's been some ups and downs for us," Bucks forward Bobby Simmons said. "But we still played the game. It wasn't like we played our best game but we didn't play our worst, either. Collectively I think we did the best we could tonight."

That was the best you could do. Is that serious? Gilbert Arenas is out for 3 months, and the Wizards didn't quit. Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, and Tim Duncan all have missed time this year, and the Spurs didn't quit. It's called stepping up. You specifically Bobby are paid enough to garner a solid offensive threat that you are not. Maybe if you actually played the damn game, and not taken your money and ran after ONE good contract year with the Clippers, we woudln't be so lousy.

Marquette beats up on Providence

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=703451

Marquette 96, Providence 67

Similar to Wisconsin, a nice start to conference play, esspecially on the road. After an initial horrible start, the Golden Eagles called a timeout to regroup, possibly settle down, and ended up with a big win. The biggest things in this game to take forward besides the huge margin of victory was the intersity and tenacity that MU showed. Also, the FT shooting which was a big weakness last year, but has improved this year. A steller 22/25 o 88%. Lazar Haywood also showed up big 14 pt 6 reb, including 3/4 from behind the arc.

John Donovan Doesn't Like What The Brewers Have Done

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/john_donovan/01/02/hotstove.wednesday/index.html

First he raves and raves about the Fukudome signing by the Cubs. I think the he will struggle in MLB. He had 30 HR power in Japan, but just how does that translate? Well the Matsui's, Kaz and Hedeki, are about the only notable Japanese hitters to come over to America, won't even make a joke about the Shinjo clown the Giants had a while back. Hedeki went from 50 HRs in Japan to between 25 and 35 in America. Kaz can't hit the broadside of a barn except with a bat as long as the Nile, and even then only at Coors Field, and I he had 20 HR power in Japan. I'd say he hits around 15- 20, which is about league average for a corner OF. His OBP is very solid, and should approach .375 in MLB, but he has bone spurs in his elbow, and is making 12 million. Another bizzarre part of this post is the obvious contradictions made by the "professional" Donovan. He says in the Reds paragraph that Cordero was a too-long too-high deal. Then criticizes the Brewers for replaces him with Gagne, who they claim got WAY too much money by citing his Boston numbers. Why ignore his Texas numbers??? O wait, I forgot, Texas isn't a big market, so they don't matter. It's a one year deal. Almost no risk there. Our best 5 players make less than $500,000 a year, it's a smart deal to make. He criticizes Linebrinks 4 year, 19 million dollar deal, but still says the Brewers overpaid a better David Riske to a one year, 6 million less contract. Man, you have the job that about 30 million men in America would die for, and you put this BS out there. Man, 28 million could do a better job.

Wisconsin wins Big Ten opener

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=702860

Wisconsin 70, Michigan 56

Jon Leuer has really played well this year. I don't recall hearing about him at all on recruiting sites or anything like that. But he has some game. Nice intensity, shooting range, and fits the system well. A good win on the road in the Big Ten is always hard to come by, even against a team as lousy as Michigan. This team has some potential to get to the Sweet 16, which would shockingly outdo last years dynamite squad.

Badgers disappionting football season ends in bowl loss

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=702567

Tennessee 21, Wisconsin 17

Several plays late in the game went against Wisconsin. The fumble by Tennessee was clearly fumbled, and it looked to me like he got his foot, need only one, inbounds. The first down with 46 seconds left was a terrible play, it did not appear to be a first down, and when called a first down the clock should have stopped. There went 10 seconds. Dispite these plays, the game was well within grasp. However, many poor decisions were made to but the blame back on the Badgers. On 4th and 2 from about the Vols 25, Bielima decides that a QB bookleg should be run. Now, I wouldn't have minded a FG or a run play, or even a high percentage pass play, but a QB rollout. Come on. Tyler Donovan has become too reliant on his legs. I praise him for the beating he took, and the toughness he showed, but some of those hits are just plain stupid to take. It is important to dive for a TD or a 1st down, but meaningless to try to do the same when going after a measly yard. This puts him at risk for injury and the potential to fumble the football.

Bucks Win (finally)

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=702871

Bucks 103, Heat 98

Mo Williams and Charlie Bell get the game balls. The two players on the Bucks who are probably the bulk of the complaining by other Buck fans played the best games. Mo Williams shows signs of being a better PG with games like these, but still needs to play more consistently at a high level. Dwayne Wade, obviously a fellow Marquette alum, has to be one of the toughest players in the NBA. All the pain he complains about being in, and the times he still trots out on the floor, and fills the box score.
